Private garden tour

During the summer months, the grounds of Friars Court can be booked for a private afternoon visit, which include both a guided tour of the gardens and a homemade cream tea.

  • Monday to Fridays
  • between the months of May and September
  • minimum 12 visitors, maximum 48 visitors

As an inclusive part of a private visit, your host Charles Willmer would guide everyone on an informative 45-minute tour around the grounds. The route follows a level path, suitable for wheelchair users. Along the way, Charles talks aout the history of his home, the development of the gardens, and the conservation work carried out on the farm. After the tour, visitors may continue to wander and explore the grounds at their leisure, visit the museum to see some of the Roman and medieval artefacts recovered from the land, and read more about the history of Friars Court. Alternatively, they can simply sit, relax, and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the gardens.

Visitors are then escorted through to the Garden Room, with views over a lawn and herbaceous borders, where they can indulge in a traditional home-made cream tea consisting of scones with strawberry jam & whipped cream, lemon drizzle cake, tea & coffee. The scones and cake will have been baked by Charles on the morning of the visit.

In addition to the large grass car park, there is ample space in the main yard (on hard standing) for a coach. Wheelchair-accessible facilities are available, and there is a level path around part of the grounds. Please note that access to the museum involves walking over gravel.

Garden visit with a guided tour and cream tea: £13.00 per person (minimum 12 visitors) Recommended duration for a visit 2½ hours
